Freebies, Discounts and Deals for Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Martin Luther King Day is Monday, January 21, 2019.
So, in the United States, we celebrate Martin Luther King Day on the third Monday in January, because that’s around his birthday. MLK Day is a National Holiday that celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., an influential American civil rights leader. This day is also known as MLK Day, King Day, and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Martin Luther King was a leader in the movement to end racial segregation in the United States. His most famous address was the “I Have A Dream” speech.
We’ve rounded up some free events on MLK day. But, be sure to check your local area for MLK Events near you. There will be parades, breakfast events, walkathons/runs, and more in many cities.
Also remember that banks, the post office, most schools, and The New York Stock Exchange will be closed for January 21, 2019. Most stores and restaurants will be open and offer discounts and sales.

Arboretums and Botanical Gardens – many offer free admission, so check with those in your area!
Museums – as you can see from the specific list below, many museums will offer free admission on MLK day. Our list is only partial, so be sure to check with your local museum to see if they’re offering free entry
National Parks – Open parks, and parks that charge admission, will waive fees on MLK Day.
Equal Justice Initiative’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice, located Montgomery, Alabama. Also offers free admission to the memorial and its accompanying Legacy Museum in downtown Montgomery.
The Mark Twain House & Museum, located Hartford, Connecticut. So, they will have free regular tours of the historic house on Martin Luther King Jr. Day from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Adler Planetarium, located Chicago, Illinois. Illinois residents get free general admission (ID required).
Shedd Aquarium, located Chicago. Also offers free admission for Illinois residents on 1/21/19.
The Field Museum,, located Chicago. Also offers free admission for Illinois residents 1/21/19.
Reardon Convention Center, located Kansas City, Kansas. They’re giving free admission to theater trailer live production from “The Underground” and a performance from a 200-voice mass choir. 1/29/19
The Boston Children’s Museum, located Boston. They’re also offering free admission on January 21, 2019.
The Museum of Fine Arts, located Boston. Also offering free admission on January 21, 2019.
Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, located St. Paul, Minnesota. The Ordway is offering free admission to “Women of Color in STEM” celebration on 1/21/19.
Levine Museum of the New South, located Charlotte, NC. Offering free admission. And, enjoy a youth volunteer fair along with performances, film screenings, and arts and crafts.
Akron Art Museum, located Akron, Ohio. They will give free admission to guests on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019.
Akron Zoo, located Akron. Another free admission on 1/21/19.
Baseball Heritage Museum, located Cleveland. They’re giving free admission on January 21, 2019.
Cleveland Botanical Garden, located Cleveland. Also giving free admission 1/29/19.
Cleveland Museum of Art, located Cleveland. Visitors may visit the museum’s collections free of charge Monday, Jan. 21, 2019.
Cleveland Museum of Natural History, located Cleveland. Another free admission on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Great Lakes Science Center, located Cleveland. They will have free admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, 2019
Maltz Museum, located Beachwood. They’re giving free admission for special exhibition, as well as hands-on crafts and activities on 1/21/19.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, located Cleveland. They will have free admission on Monday, January 21, 2019.
Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh located Pittsburgh, and are featuring free MLK events for visitors.
Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, located Pittsburgh, and also giving free admission on 1/21/19.
National Rights Museum, located Memphis. Visitors get free entry by donating either canned goods for the Mid-South Food Bank, or a blood drive benefiting Vitalant.
Northwest African American Museum, located in Seattle. They will have free admission on Monday, January 21. So, there will be special activities such as speakers, film screenings, performances of freedom songs, a pop-up soul food cafe, and art activities for kids.
