Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil – Review and Giveaway
We shared a great offer for a free cook book from Tropical Traditions a few weeks ago. I can’t say I knew what Virgin Coconut Oil was before that, but it sounded interesting! My family aren’t big coconut eaters. I like it okay, but wouldn’t go out of my way to get something with coconut. My grandma used to make the most incredible cookies and cakes with coconut – I loved those. Kings Hawaiian makes a cookie treat with coconut that is amazing, and I love. Yet, whenever I initially think of coconut, “yum” is not my first thought.
Tropical Traditions contacted me shortly after the free cookbook offer and offered to host a Gimmie review and giveaway!! My very well packed Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil arrived last week. I opened the box and stared at it, wondering “what am I going to do with this?!”
Okay, I admit it. I had to look up the Tropical Traditions Recipes blog to see what I might actually use it for. Turns out you can substitute it in place of shortening or margarine in baking. You can use it in everything from smoothies, pie crusts, muffins, pumpkin bread, stuffing and they even have a succulent recipe (complete with video how-to) on preparing your Thanksgiving Turkey!!
You can change up recipes to taste more “coconutty” if you prefer. But, using Tropical Traditions Gold Label Coconut Oil in place of shortening, there is virtually NO coconut taste. Did you catch that? It doesn’t taste like coconut! At least it didn’t when I used it in ginger snaps and Hawaiian bread. It tastes really rich and buttery. I didn’t tell my husband I’d used Coconut Oil in the cookies or bread, I had him taste them. Then I had my stepson taste them as my husband devoured the bread while making all sorts of noise. Both of them LOVE Kings Hawaiian bread, so this was really a tough crowd. The only thing they noted – and I agreed – was it didn’t have the light texture that KH bread has. It’s much more dense, but it tastes amazing! It’s more like a dessert bread (think: pumpkin bread). This could have been because I used a breadmaker to mix it, then baked it in the oven. But I think the rich coconut oil had a lot to do with it. It tastes like the bread is already buttered. And, the cookies were incredible too. They’re something you’d expect to be more dense – so it was a little better than perfection. I took some out of the oven right at 8 minutes and they stayed chewey. The ones I left in a few more minutes came out snappy. Both were incredibly good. The flavor was rich and buttery. Did I mention both my husband and stepson “hate” coconut? They couldn’t even taste it. Not even a subtle hint of it. And, I’m not telling.
Why should you consider using coconut-based products instead of oil-based? That’s simple: it’s much healthier. And, it’s gluten free!! The medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) contained in Tropical Traditions Gold Label Coconut Oil are similar to those in human breast milk, so you can imagine the health benefits. To receive equal health benefits of breast milk, you’d need to consumer 3.5 tablespoons daily. But if you remember the scene in the movie Castaway when Tom Hanks ate too many coconuts, you probably shouldn’t start with that much, and they warn not to eat it all at once – especially if you’re used to a low-fat diet.
They also sell other coconut-based items such as: organic palm shortening. coconut milk, coconut water vinegar; as well as supplements, small kitchen appliances, non-toxic household cleaners, pest control, pet products and more!!
