Moms Taken Care Of by Whitney Dody
How often do you have those days that you’re just not sure what you’re going to do to keep the kids busy? How about those nights where dinner time has already snuck up on you and you’re still not quite sure what you’re going to fix for dinner? And lastly, how do you feel when you get to the grocery store and realize that you don’t really have a list of what you need?
As parents, we’re constantly focusing on so many things and it’s difficult to forget small details. About a year ago I was reading in the book of Proverbs and when I got to Proverbs 31 it reminded me how much I should strive towards in being a mother and wife. It didn’t take me long to look around and see where my time was really being wasted, it was in all of those small details. I realized that not having things planned out ahead of time was really costing me a lot of precious time in the long run. I figured that I couldn’t be the only parent with these issues and I began our website, Moms Taken Care Of, to see if there were other parents out there that would benefit from planning ahead as much as I would.
We launched our site with weekly menus and categorized grocery lists, along with weekly craft and activity ideas for your children. It wasn’t long before we were hearing praises about how much other parents were benefitting from our site. Not only was I giving myself more time with my family by doing this planning, but I was also helping others have that extra time with their families and it quickly became a huge blessing in my life. After about six months of hearing the praises, I decided to have a cookbook with all the benefits of the site as well.
At the beginning of October, we released our new cookbook, The Gift of Time (which it truly has been). The cookbook includes 52 week’s worth of menus and CATEGORIZED grocery lists. (You’ll notice I capitalized categorized, because all of us with young children know how going to store may not always be the easiest chore.) Along with the menus and grocery lists we included a monthly breakdown of about 15-20 different activities and crafts you can do with your children each month.
Here’s an example of the different craft and activity suggestions we give to our fans each week:
Weather Chart:
This simple weather chart will give your children something to look forward to each and every morning. Using a paper or plastic plate, divide the plate into sections (rain, snow, clouds, sun, etc). You can have your children draw the weather conditions or use household items to represent the weather. Next, simply use a clothespin and glue an arrow on the clothespin to make a marker for the children to determine the weather each day. It’s simple, affordable, AND you get to reuse it every day!
What You’ll Need: Paper or plastic plate, clothespin, markers, optional household items to represent weather conditions
Traditional Leaf Placemat:
Your children will enjoy this great craft, because the get to be indoors and outdoors! Go on a nature walk and have your children pick their favorite leaves of all colors. Once all the leaves have been chosen, it’s time to make your own personal placemat by arranging the leaves on clear contact paper and topping with the clear contact paper again to seal. To make for a great tradition, have your children make their leaf placemat that they will use each year on Thanksgiving and writing on their placemat what they’re thankful for that year. Your craft will be used for years to come with great memories being made!
What You’ll Need: Leaves (your choice of color and types), clear contact paper, scissors, paint marker (for traditional touch)
Candy Wrapper Picture Frame: With Halloween just around the corner, what better way is there to plan a craft with those leftover Halloween candy wrappers? Simply use modge podge and the candy wrappers to make a frame, light plate cover, or really just whatever you’d like. In our example, we used a craft frame (you could also just use a piece of cardboard and cut out the center to fit a 4×6 photo). Next, we modge podged candy wrappers to the frame and finished it off by hot gluing a couple of pieces of candy corn to the frame for a little extra touch.
What You’ll Need: Leftover candy wrappers, Craft frame, Scissors, Modge Podge, 4×6 photo
