Promoting a fake freebie will increase the value of a website by making it highly traveled (increase traffic) and increase what's known as "Google Page Rank." People register domain names and then sell them to the highest bidder. Selling a website with high traffic and a high Google Page Rank will bring more money than an unknown, untraveled website. So, why not add a fake, badly Photoshopped free offer! Your traffic will go off the charts and you'll have all those links from freebie sites (which is how Google Page Rank increases).
There are TONS of ads on every page. This site was created to generate income from ads. Offering a free can cooler will generate traffic to hopefully click those ads.
And, colleges pay sites like this to recruit potential students.
