Breaking news! What is the Tide Pod Challenge?
My newsfeed and television are blowing up with these warnings: Beware the Tide Pod Challenge!
What is the Tide Pod Challenge?
Teens are challenging each other to pop a laundry pod into their mouth while filming it, and posting on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others.
Since the pods are said to “look like candy” it’s been joked about for several years.
But now teens are taking it to a seriously dangerous level.
Why are Tide Pods dangerous if eaten?
It probably goes without saying that Tide Pods are not supposed to be eaten. But, then again, here we are with this ridiculous “challenge” actually being taken by kids!
They are poisonous.
According to CBS News, “Ann Marie Buerkle, acting chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, says ingesting any of the liquid carries a deadly risk.”
At least 10 deaths have been linked to ingesting these pods. Two were toddlers, eight were seniors with dementia.
Ingredients in the pods include ethanol, hydrogen peroxide and polymers – among other things. It’s poisonous!
What should you do right now?
Please talk to your kids – even if it seems so painfully obvious that no one should put laundry detergent in their mouth! Tell them the deadly consequences of even setting it in their mouths.
Then, talk to them about peer pressure and making good decisions, even if “all the kids are doing it!”
This isn’t a joke, it’s life and death! Help your children realize how serious this really is.
